The team

Three coaches who learn your name.

The same faces on the same nights, so the person holding your pads knows what you worked on last week.

Your first session

Seventy minutes of Boxing Basics, round by round.

Before you start, a coach goes through the health questionnaire with you (sample club policy). After that, this is how the seventy minutes run on a Boxing Basics night.

  1. Rope and shadowboxing

Skipping, then a few rounds of shadowboxing in front of the long mirror.

    Ten minutes

  2. Feet on the floor lines

Painted lines on the floor keep your stance honest while you practise stepping, turning and the jab.

    A quarter of an hour

  3. Pads with a partner

One of you holds, one of you throws, then you swap. Nobody throws back in Boxing Basics.

    Ten minutes

  4. Bag rounds against the bell

Three-minute rounds while the coach works along the line fixing guards.

    Twenty-five minutes

  5. Stretch and notes

A stretch on the floor while the coach notes what you covered, so next week starts from there.

    Ten minutes

Boxfit Circuit and Young Boxers follow their own plans; your coach explains each one on the night. There is no charge for a taster session.

Members

In their own words.

Members rate the club 4.8 out of 5 (a sample rating the club typed itself, not a review platform).

  • “I put off coming for about a year. On the first night a coach spent ages just on my feet, and nobody treated me like the new one.”

Questions

Before your first night.

The questions first-timers ask most. A coach is happy to answer the rest on the night, or call the club.

More questions about the classes
Will I have to spar?

Only if you want to, and only after a coach invites you. Boxing Basics, Boxfit and Young Boxers have no sparring at all.

What happens at a taster session?

A coach meets you at the desk for the health questionnaire, then you warm up with the class and spend the pad rounds with a coach. There is no charge for a taster session.

Is boxing at the club safe for children?

Young Boxers classes have no sparring and no punches to the head. Jo and Rhys are both on the floor every session, and a parent or carer signs a child in and out (sample club policy).

Can I come on my own?

Most first-timers do. The coach introduces you to the group in the warm-up and checks on you between rounds.

Where do I change and leave my things?

Changing rooms with showers are by the entrance, and there are hooks for bags along the back wall (sample details).
