The classes

  1. A woman in boxing gloves laughing beside a training partner at the bags in a bright gymStart here

    Boxing Basics

Stance, footwork, the six basic punches and how to defend them, taught in small groups with a coach on the pads.

    For
    Beginners and improvers
    Ages
    17 and over
    Length
    Seventy minutes

The first four weeks stay on stance, guard, the jab and moving your feet. After that the coach adds hooks, slips and short combinations, and every night finishes on the bags.

There is no sparring in Boxing Basics. Some members ask about it after a few months; plenty never do, and that is fine.

    What you work on

    • A guard you can hold and a stance that keeps you balanced
    • Jab, cross, hooks and uppercuts, thrown with your legs as well as your arms
    • Slips, rolls, parries and blocks
    • Combinations on the pads with a coach
    • Bag rounds against the bell to build fitness
    • A stretch and a quick word with your coach to finish

    Bring

Trainers or boxing boots, shorts or joggers, a T-shirt and a water bottle. Gloves and hand wraps come off the club rack.

    Boxing Basics: Monday 7:15pm, Tuesday 6:10pm, Thursday 6:10pm, Friday 6:05pm, Saturday 11:25am (5 a week)

  2. A woman in black boxing gloves throwing a punch at a leather heavy bag by a tall windowNo contact

    Boxfit Circuit

Bag rounds, skipping, ladder footwork and bodyweight moves, set to a round timer. Nobody hits back.

You move between stations on a three-minute bell with a minute to breathe in between. The coach shows each station first and offers an easier version for knees, backs and first nights.

In Boxfit you never face a partner who punches. It is the workout and the technique without the contact, and plenty of members come for nothing else.

    What you work on

    • Bag rounds with simple combinations
    • Skipping and footwork ladders
    • Squats, lunges, presses and core work between rounds
    • A coach who adjusts each station for you

    Bring

Trainers, comfortable gym clothes and water. Bag gloves for the stations hang on the rack.

    Boxfit Circuit: Tuesday 5:15pm, Wednesday 7:15pm, Thursday 5:15pm (3 a week)

  3. A pair of worn leather boxing gloves held up against a black backgroundAges 8 to 16

    Young Boxers membership

Young Boxers cover stance, footwork and the straight punches first, in short bursts with plenty of pad work. Both groups train for fifty minutes.

There is no sparring in the young boxers’ classes. Partners hold pads and copy each other’s footwork, and nobody throws a punch at anyone’s head.

    What you work on

    • Balance, coordination and footwork drills
    • Basic punches on the pads and bags
    • Listening, taking turns and looking after a partner
    • A calm cool-down before home time

    Bring

Trainers, shorts or joggers, a T-shirt and a drink. The rack has child-sized gloves.

    Young Boxers 8 to 11: Monday 5pm, Wednesday 5pm, Saturday 9:15am (3 a week)

    Young Boxers 12 to 16: Monday 6pm, Wednesday 6pm, Friday 5pm, Saturday 10:15am (4 a week)

  4. Hands in wrapped boxing bandages holding a clear gum shield against a dark backgroundBy invitation

    Sparring Night

Controlled, coached sparring in headguards and gum shields for members ready to test their defence. The coach picks every pair and stops any round that gets out of hand.

    For
    Members a coach has invited
    Ages

    Length
    An hour and a quarter

Included in adult membership, once invited

A coach invites you once they have watched you in Boxing Basics for a couple of months and know you can look after a partner. Rounds are short and a coach sets the pace for every pair.

Sparring Night is not a taster class. Ask about it once you are a member; nobody is expected to spar.

    What you work on

    • Controlled sparring at an agreed pace
    • The coach chooses each pair before the bell
    • Headguards and gum shields for everyone
    • A coach watching every round

    Bring

Your own gum shield, plus gloves and a headguard (the club has spares). Wraps every time.

    Sparring Night: Tuesday 7:35pm, Thursday 7:35pm (2 a week)

Your first visit

From request to first round.

Three steps, the first one from home. There is no charge for a taster session.

  1. Request a taster

Tell us the class and the session you want in the next fortnight, plus a mobile or email. A coach replies by the end of the next working day to confirm it; nothing is booked until then.

  2. Health questionnaire

Filled in at the desk before you train and kept by the club, so a coach knows about any injury (sample club policy).

  3. Your first round

You warm up with the class, then a coach takes you through stance and the jab on the pads.

Questions

Class questions.

Something not covered here? A coach can answer it on the night, or call the club.

Which class should I try first?

Boxing Basics teaches you to box. Boxfit Circuit is the workout on the bags with nobody facing you. Children and teenagers join the Young Boxers group for their age.

Can I come to more than one class a week?

Yes. Adult membership covers every Boxing Basics and Boxfit session, and pay as you go works for any of them.

What if I have an injury or a health condition?

Tell us on the health questionnaire before your first session. A coach will suggest what to leave out, and for some conditions we will ask you to check with your doctor before you train (sample club policy).

Do the classes run on bank holidays?

Bank holidays can change the timetable, so check with the club before you travel. The club closes for a winter break between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day (sample dates).

When is the yearly club fee due?

Monthly members pay £19 once a year, starting in their second month. Pay as you go never carries it.

Taster sessions

Try one session. Then decide.

Tell us which class you would like to try and which night suits. We reply to confirm it; nothing is booked until we do.

  • There is no charge for a taster session
  • Classes every weekday evening and Saturday morning
  • Sparring only ever by a coach’s invitation
