Our story

An empty unit, a ring and two heavy bags.

Slipline started in 2011 in a ground-floor unit at Larkhill Works, with a second-hand ring, two heavy bags and a handful of members who had never boxed.

Beginners still make up most of every class. They learn to defend before they learn to hit hard, young boxers learn to look after a partner, and nobody is pushed into sparring.

The room is plain on purpose: bags along one wall, a ring at the back, ropes on the rack and a viewing bench beside the ring for parents. What matters is the coaching, and the coaches are the same people every week.

How the club runs

Safe enough to enjoy it.

Sample club policies and sample claims, each one labelled as a sample.

  • A health questionnaire first

Everyone fills one in before their first session, and tells a coach if anything changes. For some conditions we ask you to check with your doctor before you train (sample club policy).

  • Young Boxers with a grown-up nearby

A parent or carer signs each child in and out, stays for the first session and is welcome on the viewing bench. Jo and Rhys are both on the floor for every Young Boxers session (sample club policy).

  • Sparring only by invitation

Nobody spars until a coach has watched them train and invites them. Headguards and gum shields are worn in every round.

  • Checked Young Boxers coaches

Both Young Boxers coaches hold enhanced DBS checks (Jo and Rhys), renewed on the club’s own schedule (sample claim; enhanced DBS checks are the England and Wales system).

  • First aid on site

All three coaches are first aid trained, so a first aider is at every session. The first aid kit and ice packs are by the desk (sample claim).

  • Insured for training

Club and members insured for training (sample claim). The insurer is not named in this demo.

  • “I put off coming for about a year. On the first night a coach spent ages just on my feet, and nobody treated me like the new one.”
